New Pigeon Owners 200917

 FOR NEW PIGEON OWNERS
. . . Pigeons are known to seek human help for their needs. .This one chose you, you're stuck with him, you belong to him now ~:<) . . That makes you very lucky. . Very easy to care for... food (Pigeon seed), water, safety, love and affection... that's all they need.. can handle large temperature extremes too, minus 35 deg. They don't "need" a partner as long as they get love and attention from you . . . They become very attached to you. With a bird-partner they tend to bond with their bird partner instead of you. Near impossible to know M/F unless it lays an egg, or DNA testing. They both exhibit M/F characteristics.
. . They do need flying exercise, the more the better. Indoors, a cage is for sleeping only. Best if it can be free during the day, otherwise need a cage big enough to fly just a bit. Some people dedicate a room for the bird. My 2 house Pigeons (both F, Not a pair) are alway free in the house, no cage ever. They come to wake me every morning for hugs. They like to take baths, I use a Tupperware tub . . Many choose to have their birds wear Pigeon Diapers. . Because yours is so young, yours is a good candidate to fly outside with you if you choose, but ONLY IF it's safe, no predators, hawks cats, etc. There is a risk, so many choose to NOT let them fly free outside.... depends on circumstances where you live. Some are homers but others will get lost if they leave your yard.
. . They generally live 12 years and up to 20 years. Wild Pigeons are lucky to live 5 years, (predators, accidents). Chemicals (odors) can kill birds, candles, cleaners, etc. Some live alongside other pets, cats, dogs, but that can be risky too, just depends on the individual pet. But Parrots (and pet Chickens) have been known to kill Pigeons. My cat and dog LOVED my birds, so kind and gentle and the birds loved them too.
. . . My birds come with me everywhere, hiking camping, vacations, visiting, shopping, love to ride on the dashboard... but that depends on the bird. Some are not capable of flying more than a very short distance (100 feet?). I do NOT take my distance flyers away from my yard, can get lost. Yours is likely a distance flyer.
. . Have fun.... you're going to fall deeply in love ~:<) ]
