Pigeons Visiting Nursing Home Boutwells Pearl Khufu more

"CHICKENS, PIGEONS, and DOVES, OH MY"... at many nursing homes, Minnesota and Wisconsin ~:<)
Many hundreds of times now, with a variety of birds.(Video, click on pic).
STARRING - - Pearl Jacobin, Khufu Egyptian Swift, Simon Modena, Mr. King Show King, Shmoo Silky Chicken, Mini and Spot Dove, Quail, Nursing home residents and Staff, and my 101yo Mother (Other birds, dog and cat not in film clip).
-
- Pearl Jacobin has been held by nearly 1,000 residents, and has never flown or pooped on anyone (she can do both ~:<) . . . She will jump on anyone's arm and they can pet her.
- - It's a good feeling to see how excited the residents get when holding the birds, HUGE smiles. They LOVE the birds. Many have never held a bird.
Many more times to go ~:<)

The life and adventures of Khufu Egyptian Swift Pigeon.

Khufu (Coo-Foo) Egyptian Swift Pigeon. . . . She is very much a hyper-active tomboy.  Her father was Nile and her Mother was Cleopatra.. and her surrogate mother was Sue-Ez. All three of them raised Khufu together, with loving care.
. . When Khufu-the-egg hatched June 15, 2016, In the cool darkness, with flashlight, I first discovered her cold blue naked dead body laying on the floor. After hatching, she had fallen out of the nest and dropped 2 feet to the wire mesh floor. I picked her up, her blue lifeless limp body cold as ice, but then I noticed she was still Very slowly breathing so I cupped my hands around her and dashed to the house to get her warm. Slowly she seemed to recover but I didn't hold out much hope for her... if she did live she'd probably have serious lifelong development problems from being SO cold and near-dead for a few hours?
. .  When sufficiently warm and recovered I returned her to the heated nest where all three parents were waiting to feed and take care of her. I made a bigger lip on the nest so she wouldn't fall again. From then on they took excellent care of her, all three feeding and nurturing her. They were excellent parents, tutoring her in all aspects of being a Pigeon. Slowly she grew up with no noticeable consequences.  It was a real learning experience (for me)..
. . Not sure if she was male of female, I waited until she was over 6 months old before I decided HE was Male (no egg), So I named him after the Egyptian Pharos Khufu, owner of the Largest Pyramid in Egypt.
Then .. HE decided to lay an egg... but everybody in the neighborhood already knew him as Khufu.
. . Right from the beginning I knew Khufu was not going to be just another ordinary Pigeon. Full of surprises every day, very impetuous, curious,  and mischievous.... unpredictable ...never followed the rules (a lovable brat). It's been quite an experience knowing her thru her Teen years. She has a very strong confident personality.
. . NOW she is a grown young woman (but still a lovable brat). She is overflowing with endless non-stop surplus energy, never stops moving for an instant. She still doesn't follow the rules, does everything to the extreme, including cuddling and loving, flying, eating, etc.. She's the boss. She'll usually do what you want but It's always on HER terms, done HER way, when SHE wants. Sometimes she's just a little feathered Imp.. She never asks me for what she wants, She Demands if from me (food, hugging, treats, etc).
. . But .. she tells me every day that she truly and deeply loves me (she Demands my love), and, I rather like her dynamic confident independent unpredictable personality.

Note, Almost all the outside pics take place under a huge tree that totally shelters the deck and patio.... it's safe.

Simon, Khufu, and Pearl Pigeon taught me tricks

1) Simon Pigeon (RIP) taught me that when he pecked at my shirt, he wanted a treat.
2) Then Khufu Pigeon taught me the same thing
3) Now Pearl Pigeon has taught me that when she pecks at my shirt she wants a treat. . . . . .(Pigeons are smart ~:<)
. . . . Simon and Khufu also taught me that when they pecked my HAND they wanted a HUG. (Pearl has yet to teach me that, I've only had her 3 weeks)

Threesome nude bathing

Threesome nude bathing... Birds are just like people.
Khufu (F) wants to join 2.5 and her husband. 2.5 was not interested in sharing.
Actually, all Khufu wanted was to take a bath ~:<)

160816 Hawk attacked birds on railing

THE HAWK skimmed  one foot above my shoulder like a missile yesterday... aimed 6 feet in front of me at my 4 pigeons sitting peacefully on the deck railing. There was an explosion of birds flying to escape the hawk and in 1/4 second the hawk had vanished thru the lilacs... not a bird left on the railing It was over in an micro-second. I ran down to the patio, where my white Homer Pigeon 2.5, had smashed herself into the house trying to get away and she  got wedged into some folded lawn chairs and was stuck... I picked her up, no blood, she was ok, just very frightened. I looked for the other three. Newbie and Sue-ez had flown away but had quickly returned to the railing, they were ok too.
. . BABY Khufu however, was nowhere to be found. It appeared that the hawk had snatched him right off the railing and flew away with him. Over and over we searched everywhere, all the tiny hiding places, etc... and searched the neighbors yards. Khufu had vanished. We searched and searched for 3 hours. . . . . Khufu had been having so much fun, flying repeatedly to my arm, shoulder, and head... I love that little bird. Now it was clear that he was gone. I gave up the search and sat on the couch and cried...
. . But then, more than 3 hours later, Karen discovered Sue-ez (Khufu's mother) sitting on the playhouse in the far back of the yard, with another bird... I ran out and yes, it was Khufu, looking as good as usual.
. . Apparently Khufu DID fly away, far away? but even at 7 weeks old he managed to find his way back home. Khufu followed me to the deck, then onto my arm and we went inside and I hugged him for a long time . . He/She's fine ~:<)
.
. It appears that the white Homer, 2.5, had been the target, but 2.5 has been attacked many times and is experienced at not getting killed.
. .
Just two weeks earlier the same happened but we were not home to witness it... baby Khufu was hiding in a window well and the others were gone. Sue-ez eventually returned an hour later, but Cleopatra did not... That's when I lost my sweet loving Cleopatra Egyptian Swift.

160810 Khufu first real flight, bath, fell

                                              160810 Khufu first real flight

A Tough lesson learned.  Baby Khufu's (Coofoo) first "real" flying today at 6 wks old. Successfully from pole barn roof to house roof (100') then to the deck railing to take a bath.  . . . Surprise, ... when he tried to fly, he discovered that wet birds do not fly as well as dry birds. He fell (fluttered) down 8' to the patio, uninjured.
He's in the house with me now, drying out.
