Mystery of the infinite bucket.

Five years ago I started to fill it. In six months it was half full.
Over the next 5 years I added to it at a constant rate and now 5 years later it’s STILL only half full.

HOW long can this go on ? ? ?
Will it ever fill up ? ? ?

Just how much does a pound of Feathers weigh ?

  1. LOL! I guess so much of the volume is air. As you add more, the air in between feathers gets displaced. Interesting experiment.

  2. Hehe. I remember that question from college: Which weighs more – a pound of feathers or a pound of bricks? :)

  3. lenvan - Yes... it's surprising how much they compact. Even more surprising is that they recover completely when separated.

geninai - I suppose if I weighed the bucket I'd find the net weight is 10 times more even though the volume of feathers is the same after 5 years.

  4. Hehe. I suppose you might. And then someday you can stuff yourself a lovely pillow. ;)

  5. Gemini - Um... what I had in mind for the feathers is to sell Bert's feathers on ebay for $8.00 each (Bert will be naked soon).

  6. Oh really? I guess you can sell domestic bird feathers, then? They are very pretty .. I can see why people would buy them, for various crafts and stuff. Or are you pulling my leg?

  7. geminai - HA Ha ha... well... pulling your leg. Like Bert is so famous that people would pay for his feathers HA Ha ha HO Ho ho...
    But
On the other hand... I bet I would sell a few? (I might try it just for fun). The feathers ARE beautiful.. Natures natural artwok. Someday I'm planning to post a blog or photo album of nothing but feathers... so beautiful they are. I can't bear to throw them away.

  8. Hehe, well, I'm gullible. But I know it's illegal to own/transport/sell many bird feathers. At least wild birds, though I think it's based upon their migratory status or something. Been a long time since I researched it. :) But domestic birds? I don't know the rules about that. I find the whole rule thing silly, anyway. I see WHY they make the laws, but I still find them ridiculous. I don't blame you for not throwing them away! Don't tell anyone, but I keep all the beautiful feathers I find in our yard, too! Well, except the recent hawk finds, because I can't afford a $10k fine! hehe.

  9. geminai - It never occured to me that it may be illegal to transport or ship feathers?? I guess I'll have to look into that... (but... a CHICKEN feather?) (what about pillows and down jackets?). I mean... birds do it all the time, even transport their feathers to other countries..I wonder if they know it's illegal? Will they get arrested?

  10. Well like...ummm...what else would you do?......put 'em back on the bird?...... 'special bird glue? or 'laser' re-attachment? (mind runs wild.....)

  11. Yeah, you're probably right, Bert, that it doesn't apply to domestic type birds. Ha. *laughing* That's MY thinking .. a hawk shed some feathers in my yard and it's illegal for me to pick them up and keep them cuz I admire them? I hate it, but that's how it is.

  12. laurie - Maybe we could build entire new birds with used feathers? \

geminai - On my farm I have picked up and saved feathers I've found and I have no idea what kind of bird they're from.. Maybe an Eagle? Hawk? owl?

  13. Ok, for the moment, Multiply is letting me in, so let me post this quickly, as I've tried a few times already today. :)

Apparently it's only migratory birds you need to especially worry about, but I know for sure eagles, owls and hawks are a big no-no, unless you belong to a Native American tribe.

  14. Never knew about the feather keeping laws before. Good thing domestic feathers are ok because with a whole bucket full you would be in a heap of trouble!

  15. I knew about the eagle feather significance before because of Pow-Wows I've attended. But I was amused on that link, the story about the woman who made Hillary Clinton a dreamcatcher with an eagle feather, and got a $1,500 fine in return. :)

  16. Oh Bert... do post an album with your feathers. You've put a few up before and they're stunning!

Kippy, that's plumb crazy... the dreamcatcher/fine story. Geez.

  17. Wow, I had no idea it was illegal to collect wild bird feathers (unless you actually attacked a bird to steal them). Shed feathers should be fair game, imo. I've never seen a migratory bird come back later to collect it's shed feathers, haha.

Hmm, If I was fined for collecting Chicken feathers, for a bucket the fine would be about $240,750,000.00

tint - Feather photo album... I want to, very time consuming, but...maybe, they're too pretty.

varainy - Whenever I find a migratory bird feather in my yard, I use the leaf blower to blow it into my neighbors yard. They can pay the fine.

  19. I think little mice are sneaking into the bucket and ferreting away feathers one at a time. They make cozy nests, you know.

    ReplyDelete
  20. chickie - ? could be. If so it's likely the nest is under the feathers though because once in the bucket mice cannot escape (makes a good mouse trap).
But I'll keep watching for mice carrying feathers... or dead mice in the bucket.

  21. I had never seen this one. It must have been done before you got stuck with me! This is so funny. I'll bet there are a lot of appreciative nest-builders around your neighborhood! It's a great idea for those who have many birds. You get rid of your excess feathers, neighborhood birds get warmth and comfort. Bert, if you weren't married, I might go down on one knee and ask for your hand...or maybe I'd just sit in my chair rubbing my knees! On the other hand, I might just email it in! :)

  22. Lowercase - I have no idea why I'm saving them. Just because they are so beautiful and I can't stand to waste them.... of course they are even prettier while still on the birds. Someday I hope to photograph each of them... then... I'm sure somebody somewhere would like to have them (maybe local birds?).

  23. Bert, as long as you don't do it while sitting in a strange bird's nest, I think that's a fine idea. Although, you should use a cameral that is capable of taing great zoom detail so that you can show each part of the feather in relief. Wouldn't that be pretty? You are smart and creative man. I'm in awe.

  24. Lowercase - I've only taken just a few feather photos... but... there are so many beautiful ones to go.
