This is an odd pair to be sleeping together

 . . .  . . . . . . . . . .
Simon Pigeon loves to cuddle and fall asleep on my chest when I'm laying back in the recliner while we watch TV together. But... Tuna Cat also loves to sleep on me too... so..they frequently sleep together.

  4. This looks very much like our house. Animals know friends in any "coat"! We recently had a tragedy ... Gris Gris, our house rooster - a Blue Cochin banty- was killed by a raccoon last week. It dug under his daytime pen which is attached to the house and got him. We miss our daily alarm rooster. He was 2 lbs. of personality plus!!! The cats miss him, too!

  8. Sweetpea - Yes, I love it too... I feel privileged that they sleep on me.
I was wondering when someone would ask about that. I will post sometime with details/photos. Of the 3 Pigeons, two (the lesbians) usually only have supervised house visits. Occasionally I let Velcro stay overnite confined to my office (Special perches with trays, easy to clean). I have special perches where ever they stay. But Simon lives part-time inside and outside. When outside, in the morning they all head for the patio door and beg to be let in.
Simon can fly just fine but when inside he never does. Therefore it's easy to have him inside. He has a special area next to the family room fireplace (linoleum floor) where he has a "house/nest" with food/water, and that's the area where he spends most of his inside time. When unsupervised a 9" fence/gate on the doors keeps him in the FamRm. Supervised, I sometimes let him roam the house. We have plastic runners on the main paths. Then he usually hangs out in my office and sleeps on the floor next to me, or on my lap.
It would be near impossible for the Chickens, but the Pigeons are much cleaner (if you know what I mean) and with good timing we can avoid almost all accidents. With their diet, their droppings are solid and dry, have no odor whatsoever and they are not allowed on carpeted areas. We have left Simon (stays on the floor) in the house for several days, loose with the cat...No problem. The other pigeons and Doves cannot be left loose unsupervised in the house because they fly... so we cannot control their droppings as well. Bottom line is... It's clean.
. . . I made an insert for the patio door so they (along with the cat) can go in/out as they please. (another blog post sometime).
. . .No more trouble than a cat. Simon is well behaved and a pleasure to have around.

  9. Awwww that is a sweet story. Simon knows which side his bread is buttered on doesn't he? Smart and lucky bird.

When I was growing up my brother was the town vet (well not really he wasn't a vet, but he was the go to guy to fix the animals) so people would bring them to us that they had found were hurt or baby birds that had fallen from a tree, etc. Needless to say, our house was a sanctum for all these unwanted souls. One day some kids came by with sparrow eggs they had found somewhere. So my brother made an incubator for them and hatched them. Of the three, one died right away, another a week or so later, but one lived. Cootchi was the cutest baby bird and really thought he was human. Loved raspberries and bananas. We would let him out of his cage to fly around quite often, but sadly one day, as does happen by natures way, our cat was hiding under a chair, saw the bird flying around and dashed out from it's hiding place and killed it. We all cried for hours, specially my Mom who just loved this bird and hated cats(this cat being another of the orphaned animals from the beginning of the story). Another time we acquired a pigeon, it had a broken wing so my brother made a splint and brought him back to his old self. We named him Walter and he lived in our solarium at the front of the house. Nice big spot for a lone pigeon. He loved it there, would fly off into the yonder for a few hours, but always came back. We tried to mate him but he would have nothing to do with that. He lived in that spot for quite a while until sadly, once again he met his demise. I don't know how the darn cat(a different one this time) got in there as the window he flew out of on occasion was pretty high of the ground, but there he was, his mangled body on the floor of the solarium. Poor Walter. Anyway, I have learned to love all animals from those experiences and also about life and death being so fragile. It was wonderful time of my life that I am truly thankful for.

Sorry for rambling on but your story brought back such wonderful memories....

  10. Just a note - Tuna cat got real close to Simon Pigeon, put his nose on Simon's head... then licked the side of Simon's head. Simon didn't mind.
