I have learned that all animals have deep feelings and emotions, the exact same feelings as humans. I have seen them get upset, they love, they have joy, sadness, anxiety, fear, jealousy, frustration , anger, rejection, lust, urges, maternal instincts, fairness, manners, depression, compassion, etc, all the emotions that we have. They are just little people.
When Lizard (2.5’s husband) got killed by a hawk a few weeks ago(Video link Lizard and 2.5 in love), 2.5 became very despondent, lethargic, and was in deep depression. She just sat around grieving with no expression, no movement, just staring straight ahead not noticing anything around her… so sad, you could almost see the tears in her eyes. She lost weight. So Ace felt sorry for her and went out and bought two more pigeons, a male Arch Angel (Archie),
and a female Arabian Trumpeter (Edith).
Then 2.5 came back to life again, but she was not happy with the "intruders", Archie and Edith. She wanted Lizard back again, she was bitter. 2.5 did not get along very well with Archie and Edith. So 2.5 tolerated the intruders for a week or so, but then one day I watched 2.5 fly away as usual, but her flight was UNusual in that she stayed very low, weaving thru the trees as she left as if she was hiding her exit.
I knew it was a bad sign. Her life had been shattered. I knew I’d never see her again, she was leaving forever and would not return. Tame pigeons are not very good at surviving in the wild so I knew it was the end for her. I waited for days, but she did not return.
But then, a miracle, on the 4th day and never expecting to see her again, 2.5 finally came back home. When I saw her this morning I ran out on the deck. She saw me and instantly flew to me and landed on the railing next to me.
She walked right up to me expecting breakfast, which I happened to have in my hand. She seemed so happy to be back, she was excited… I think she was smiling? We sat and talked to each other for a while until I froze in my bathrobe and went inside. She finished eating and taking a bath, then flew to the coop where she is now resting…. back home again. It’s so nice to see her back, I missed her. I hope the three will now become a family, even though each is from a different ethnic background.
UPDATE: Archie and Edith were both killed by a neighborhood cat several weeks later. 2.5 managed to survive by hiding in the rafters. Again 2.5 became depressed and motionless. So I got her yet another partner, then she was very active and happy once again.
But then... more tragedy in her life. With her new partner, Ringo the Dove (Spot Dove's ex-husband)... 2.5 was again madly in love now with her tiny husband Ringo. See link below for the rest of the story.
(Link disabled ) = I heard a loud thud as a bird hit hard on the window.
BUT, ... (update)
that's not the end of the story... there was more intense love, another new partner for 2.5 and again she fell madly in love with her new female partner, Velcro. For 8 years they were inseparable, hugging and kissing constantly ... SOooo madly in love.
Then, tragedy again. While flying to the deck to visit me, Velcro got killed by a hawk. 2.5 went into withdrawal.. for a whole year she just stood in her aviary window gazing out hoping Velcro would return. 2.5 would come in the house and call to Velcro over and over, hoping Velcro was in the house, where they had spent many days together. It was painful to watch...
(update) . . . Eventually yet another partner, Newbie. It took many many months but eventually 2.5 accepted Newbie, but.... It's just not the same. They are partners, but none of the intense emotional love, hugging and kissing. It's not hard to see that 2.5 still wants Velcro back ~:<( ... ... (me too).

A tale of true romance and heartbreak, but with a hoped for happy ending! I hope 2.5 settles back and accepts her new friends, :)
ReplyDeleteArchie is quite the stunner, and Edith has a gentle, empathetic look about her. I'll look forward to hearing how they all progress together.
Welcome home, 2.5! You gave your dad a scare, there!
They are all beautiful.. But you are right all animals have personalities just like humans. I'm so glad she came back home I know you must have been so worried.
ReplyDeleteWonderful story. I have an affinity for Goonie birds. Spent 1 year isolated with them, and a special Navy team, in the last of the Hawaii leeward islands past Midway Island, back in 80 watching the Russkies popping missiles over the north pole, with the nose cone dropping into that part of the Pacific. There were about 250,000 on one island, first chatting, then dancing, then pairing up, following by mating, and finally one big egg followed by tens of thousand of huge babies. They had no fear of me because they didn't know what humans were so we just huge out together. Met many other species during that time and actually I learned allot about them and myself. No matter how hard I ran, and flapped my arms, I couldn't get airborne. Enjoyed your post allot!
ReplyDeleteI have to ask this ... just a curiosity question ... what do you find so fascinating about birds? A lot of people do ... But, I'm curious what your answer is, my friend. :D
ReplyDeleteMousepotato - Not so sure if 2.5 is back for good? We'll see. But I thought is was so special that she wanted to come back. She still may decide to leave cause the other pigeons are still here. ???
ReplyDelete.....I wish you could see Archie in person, he glistens like a CD in the sun, all colors, his entire body.
Freya - Their presonalities are just as different from each other as humans are. I was so glad just to see she's still alive.
Texas - that must have been quite an experience 250k birds. Did you give them names? The whole assignment must have been quite interesting.
Blackmoon - Nothing in particular about birds, just a phase I'm going thru? (also Horses, dogs, cats, skunks, rabbits, cows, foxes, Seagulls, to name a few). BUT, The birds keep us constantly entertained with their antics. At my farm I had 9 horses (and 30 cows) and the house is on a hill so I had a 360deg view of the horses running in the pastures on 160 acres, I loved to watch them run. Here in town I can't have horses so I have Chickens... I love looking out the windows and seeing them roam around the yard, our roving lawn ornaments, beautiful plumage. Birds are so very easy to take care of, and very very cheap to have. Require almost no maintenance, so easy, and they do interact with us, follow us like little puppies. At the picnic table they sit next to us on the bench. When I'm fixing anything, they are right there helping me.. running off with the screwdriver, etc. Watch them on my "Bert Cam" and sometime you'll see me out there and they come running to me.
.....In my office I tried fish (boring) a mouse (Maintenance/smell), ant farm (too small), but my Dove Spot is like having a friend with me all day. I will never tire of her playful ways and her loving attention, she likes to cuddle. Again, very low maintenance and very cheap to have. Most birds are birds... Spot is like another person stuck in a birds body, she is very different than any other pet I've ever had (except maybe my pet seagull (very messy=outside only)). Spot is always sitting on my head/arm/hand/keyboard... always. Where ever I go in the house, she is sitting on my head or shoulder, to her it's an adventure. When I leave, she sits on my chair until I come back. She very clearly tells me what she needs and wants. If I don't pay attention to her she gets in front of my face until I pet her. She likes to be held and petted (Don't we all?) We watch TV together with her snuggled deep in my arms. And she is so funny, always getting into mischief, she has no fear of anything. She's extremely curious, whatever I'm holding in my hand in seconds she'll land on it an check it out (even food). She pulls the MP3 earphones from my ears. She's always tugging on wires. She likes to do things that are challenging, When I read the paper, she slides down the newspaper like a skier, with her wings over her back and she laughs all the way down. WHooopie ......WhoooOOoo HoooOOoo she says. Then she looks up at me as if to say..."DId you see that?". Today she was having fun rolling a roll of paper towel back and forth while standing on it - WhooOOooo HoooOOooo as it rolls back and forth... She is always so amazingly cheerful and upbeat..... we should all be that estatically happy. She talks when she's happy (all the time) but it's a very peaceful sound.
.....When she hears us wake up in the morning, she starts to coo... wanting to let us know she wants to be with us, to not forget her. A very plesant sound early in the morning.
.....That's probably a lot more than you wanted to know...? It's not just birds, I'm that way with everything.
I sure do hope this turns out well. Will you give us a follow-up on this? And I'm glad 2.5 came back home, maybe she discovered life in the wild wasn't as easy as she thought it would be. You know what? You have all the necessary ingredients for publishing a wonderful children's book. People love your bird stories, young and old.
ReplyDeleteArchie & Edith? Were You thinking of the TV show "All in the Family" when You named them?
ReplyDeleteWhen You call 2.5, do You say "Two point Five" or "Two and a half"? Beautiful Birds, All!
Birds a little people, and so are cats! Our cat Marvin has changed so much in the last 2 years since we got him out off the shelter - he's a bit clingy now, but very happy and cuddly. Makes us happy, too! Hope things will turn out for the best with 2.5!
ReplyDeleteRecon - So far so good. I was alarmed when she left again last night and didn't return, but she came back again this morning, so ? I guess she's here to stay? Where does she go at night???
ReplyDeleteDuchamp - SInce Archie is an Arch Angel, it was easiest to name him Archie and then of course who is more famous than Archie and Edith? .. it was a natural.
..... 2.5 is two-point-five, so named because when I got her she was 2 and one half months old.. A natural.
.....I wish you all could see them in person, the photos of iridescent just don't translate to photos. They look like CD's flashing in the sunlight (kinda).
Kay - I haven't met an animal yet (except for an earthworm or bug) who didn't exibit human emotions. It may not be real obvious to humans, but they absolutely do have emotions (be kind to animals). See my re-comment to Recon above (in this comment). My little Dove Spot is quite expressive, easy to see her emotions, very clear, and she's always exuberant, upbeat, and cheerful...very happy. .
Great answer, Bert
ReplyDeleteWow... im really impressed by you Bert... I didnt know you loved birds so much... Wow...
ReplyDeleteBlessings!!!
And your birds look stunning!!!
*Heidi*
Oh, I totally understand 2.5! She just needed to hit the road to clear her head- you're right they are just little people- I mean we're all made out of the same molecular junk why would we really be so different, right?
ReplyDeleteBlackmoon - Well, after all, I AM a Chicken.
ReplyDeleteHedi - (see comment above)...
I love feathers, some are just so very beautiful. (Blog someday soon).
Lisa - Yes it appears 2.5 just needed some time alone to grieve. She seems to be much better now, still not like before though... she used to fly around a lot, now hardly at all. I suspect she'll get better over time. She's getting along much better now with Archie and Edith. 2.5 was rather bitchy to them before. Today she was checking out the new pigeon nests I made,.... maybe ready to lay eggs? I think she'll be fine now.
Oh Bert honey ... I so love this about you. I love your capacity to "feel" and share with such emotion ... all things great and small. I'd love to see your pigeon aviary some day. Promise you'll show me!
ReplyDeleteOh, the poor little pigeon girl. And you say that these two new friends of hers are now gone also?! That's so sad.
ReplyDeleteAnimals (and birds) do have a way of feeling the emotions of human beings. They can tell, exactly how one means things towards them.
My dog and cats understand when I'm sorry about accidentally stepping on one of their paws, or whether I'm laughing about something. The dog will happily laugh *with* me.
The cats, however, never seem to have much of a sense of humor! (grin)
This is the sadest thing I have ever read... Im so sorry for your loss.. and 2.5's. I feel like sending a card.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link :D
ReplyDeletePigeons are very intelligent birds. I wish I could find the link I have in mind for you... perhaps another night it'll surface. It is of a study on the pigeon. They would show the bird a visual then another and then the bird had to pick out the right one. .to get food.. damn my memory. Thanks for the link. I've no doubt in my mind that animals have feelings.
