060729 Pikes Peak the Hard way.

This is as far up as I could drive.
My daughter Cindy L chose to come up the hard way and meet us near the top  (Pikes Peak, near Denver Colorado).

(Repost from Yahoo 360 - July 29, 2006)
Since It’s   SO HOT   in so many places (95 here)  I thought it would be nice to  “think cold”, therefore, Winter pictures.

These are Ice Caves near our Wisconsin farm/cabin on Lake Superior. Many of these caves are large enough to contain whole houses including the garage. Not many people get to see this because it was a very difficult 2 mile walk over jagged ice chunks and snow along the shore to get here… and it was 20 below zero F (-29c). I have lots of pictures, here are a few. There are hundreds of these caves, all covered in ice.

Water seeps from the roof of the caves and freezes. The water is 30 to 40 feet deep under our feet. The ice is maybe 3 feet thick.

Some caves go for hundreds of feet and connect with other caves so you can come out somewhere else. Bayfield ice cave

The entire shoreline is covered in ice-falls.  This is a HUGE cave. Bayfield ice cave

This is Lake Superiors Apostle Islands, 90 miles East of Duluth Minnesota. Our fruit farm and cabin are on a high hill overlooking the lake and Islands. In Summer we have boated thousands of miles amongst the islands and camped on all of them.  There are many beautiful lighthouses.

Across the street from our house in town,  my neighbor girl and her dog. I got an award for this photo, it was on the cover of our City's annual calendar. Calender photo, Neighbor girl

Roasting Wienies in town at 20 below zero way back in the back yard Fire pit.    It was so cold our hot chocolate froze.

The Chickens hate to walk in the snow so Ace L clears paths around the yard for them. Mowing snow for the Chickens
There, do you feel cooler now ? ? ?

Why would you choose to sit outside when it's 20 below zero and the house is right there!!!???

Now do you people understand where I get my crazy gene from!!??

  4. Blackmoon - I love going to the Ice caves, I have lots of great photos... another blog someday. I love 7our back yard too... considering it's in town, it's much like being out in the wilderness

Petunia*2 - Next time you'r here in Winter, we'll take you there.

jgigi - Thanks... I like looking at those pictures too.

lisa - Your Mom looks good in any outfit.
"Why would you choose to sit outside....." - Well, because we couldn't build a bon-fire in the family room.

Iriani - Oops forgot, not everyone is too warm. Someday I'll do a blog on just the caves.. I have lots of great pictures.

  6. Bill - I can't decide which I like the least... the cold of Winter or the heat of Summer but they each have their good points too.
.......Some of the Apostle Islands have even more spectacular ice caves because of the waves that crash in and freeze... but it's far far too risky to be there and look, plus it's a 22 (44) mile hike in the worst of conditions.

  7. "because we couldn't build a bon-fire in the family room" Why not!? What, suddenly the wood-stove isn't good enough for cooking hot dogs!?

  8. Lisa - well you're right... occasionally we did roast hot dogs in the woodstove... but I found that it's nearly impossible to bake a cake in there. Outside at 20 below, I guess we were just trying to prove that we can do anything in Winter that we can do in Summer (Except for maybe swimming?).

  9. Incredible photographs!...In Sydney our cold winter consists of rain and occassionally a short hail storm on the worse days.
I love the care Ace L takes clearing the path for Sir Bert. We know who's boss.

  10. Jock - Thanks... as usual thought, the pictures just don't capture what it's really like in the ice caves... it's spectacular.

  11. Bert, the are some of the most spectacular ice photos I've seen. You do good work.
But how on earth do you stand the cold to sit out in the yard and roast weiners? And yes, now I'm cold, all over again!

  15. serenole - Thanks... We've tried many times to go back but the ice rarely cooperates or is too dangerous.
