Dreams, thoughts, and memories.
We are but computers that control a machine. Our eye's, ears, touch, nose, tongue....are the peripheral input devices (like keyboard, scanner, cams, microphone, etc) to our operating system (Brain). The inputs cause our operating system to process and appropriately fetch old memories and put them together as cohesive thoughts, and to search for additional input, and cause our machine (body) to react and then perform physical tasks in response to the original input (or to store the new conclusion in memory).
Our brain memory device is similar to and more like a multi-dimensional hologram with theoretical infinite storage. But the less intense memories engraved on our hologram memory eventually get overwritten because of the more intense or more recent memories and therefore older or smaller memories diminish in resolution and clarity and eventually are obliterated and forgotten. Our memories are similar to craters on the moon... the smaller or older craters eventually get obliterated by the bigger or more recent ones and therefore old ones are lost forever (forgotten). The bigger or newer ones are more clear.
Sometimes when our inputs (eyes, ears, etc) sense something specific, our operating system creates a template from that information then does a search thru our memory to find approximately matching similar data (remembers).. then retrieves and processes the matching data (memories) and from that information creates a logical response to the original input (by speaking, looking, moving, etc).
.....The results of our reaction to the initial input are noted and processed by our operating system and duly recorded in our hologram memory for assessment by future input from our senses (they are the newest memories).
Sometimes when there is little outside input is being processed, our brains have little to do so it goes into an "Idle Loop" and performs tasks based on interruptions from all the thousands of peripherals. Some of these interruptions inadvertently cause our perpetually running operating system to retrieve and process old information from memory and create new "Thoughts"........ or cause us to day-dream or night-dream.
Dreams ......When there is no outside input (while sleeping, etc) , our perpetually running operating system somewhat randomly retrieves items from our main memory bank and tries to make sense of the randomly selected memory items and attempts to put the random mismatched pieces together to create a logical "dream" that is not likely based on current outside input... mostly from items in our memory, new and old. Some of the randomly retrieved memories have faded so sometimes inaccurate or incomplete data is inserted into the dreams which often makes them even more illogical.
When we die it's just like a computer... when you turn off the computer, all the data in volatile main memory (but not static external storage) is lost forever... all the thoughts, ideas, feelings, morals, memories, images, knowledge, etc, (the things that make up our personality) just vanish and quickly and completely disappear forever. Re-applying power will not restore the contents. Just like a computer main memory, our memory items only exist as long as power (fresh blood/oxygen) is applied, or else it vanishes. It's like when you pull the plug on a TV, there is nothing left on the screen, it only has a message when powered.. Without power (fresh blood) to our main memory, only our external memory storage is left behind.....i.e. papers and blogs we've written, physical items we've created, anything created by our output devices (hands, voice recordings, etc) and eventually, even our external memory storage will eventually go back to nature.
Kinda bleak eh? It's amazing we can think at all. See Bert's Jan 8th comment below (the longest one, response to Swag) for a bit more discussion.

READ THE COMMENTS - More significant questions and thoughts about how it all works.

All except Walt Disney, his head is in Cryogenic Stasis awaiting the day they can awaken him and unfreeze his memories along with Micky Mouse!
ReplyDeleteTexas - It will be interesting to know.... I am guessing that his brain could possilbly be technically functional, but all the memories and knowledge will have been erased... he will need a re-boot.
ReplyDeleteAll previous memories will need to be reloaded (from somewhere?).
Too bad Walt probably won't have rights to Mickey anymore by the time he is reanimated.
ReplyDeleteVery 'out of the box' thinking, this is Bert... and I can see where the correlation between human mind and computers comes from ~ it's a concept used quite often, especially in science fiction.
ReplyDeleteThe 'Idle Loop' you mention strikes a chord with me. I'm finding myself retrieving old thoughts (daydreaming) a lot lately...
Have a nosey at this link Bert ~ you might find it interesting.

wow. the grayer my hair gets the more I'm reminded of my status as a piece of walking meat.
ReplyDeleteok... I need to be more awake for this...
ReplyDeleteback tomorrow. Promise.
My favorite metaphor was Bert's comparison of the persistence of memory to the craters on the moon.
ReplyDeleteWilling - Wouldn't it be funny if Walt was revived and he talked in a high squeaky voice? ....... The moon is a visable tangible example of what a hologram film looks like... somewhat the same principle... and the same principle as our brain but the brain is in 3D so has millions of times more capacity
ReplyDeletemouse - Ya, it's pretty hard to not make somewhat of a corralation... but the best of computers is still a joke compared to the human brain. The article... I suspect the nitrous oxide lowers resistance in the brain and allows info to be exchanged and accepted more readily?
coyote - Maybe, but your brain is still beautiful.
stefnee - ok, take a nap... hope you have some great dreams.
.
I must remember to come back to this and read it when I have more time...thanks x
ReplyDelete7jewel - Ironic - This blog is about remembering to come back.

So the question is, when the brain has diminished in function due to dementia or Alzheimers is the person still there or is it just a mass of unthinking protoplasm?
ReplyDeleteBarb - good question... I fee that since our knowledge, memories, feelings, etc is what defines us and makes us who we are (our personality)... our brain may be able to physically function but without those memories our brain is just a mass of unthinking protoplasm and the "person" we know is already gone.. or going. As in Alzheimer's, the brain eventually can't even remember how to operate bodily functions and organs begin to shut down.
ReplyDeleteSo the ethical question is... Is there a point in time in this degenerative situation when the mind is so gone that it would be best to relieve the person of their imprisoned body?
ReplyDeleteBarb - Wow... you ask the wise and all knowing Chicken? HA Ha ha HO Ho ho... I dunno?
ReplyDeleteI don't know if it's ever "Best" to relieve the persons body of life?but I see nothing to gain by keeping an essentially dead person alive. Someone else please make that decision. It gives me a headache.
I guess this is how it is for chickens too...
ReplyDeleteI guess this is how it is for chickens too...
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteIriAni - Yes... sadly.... the demise of many a Chicken. Oh well, I never liked TV shows anyway.
TV's are better than Ovens if you are a chicken.
ReplyDeleteThese thoughts occur to me almost daily. The human body/mind/spirit is quite an amazing machine. We have such little time here. All the more reason to cherish every moment. I sometimes wonder if, after we die, all of our ideas and memories become energy and end up as part of something universal. The great mystery of life.
ReplyDeletetoo deep for me tonight~
ReplyDeleteOoooooh. So very deep from a rooster! I echo Barb: "So the question is, when the brain has diminished in function due to dementia or Alzheimers is the person still there or is it just a mass of unthinking protoplasm?"
ReplyDeleteGood question. is there a just a mass of unthinking protoplasm?
... is wondering what to cook for tea (dinner in American)
ReplyDeleteIriAni - Yes, unless it's a TV Chicken dinner and put into the oven. And for tea, how about a nice vegie-burger or salad?
ReplyDeleteDonna - What? I agree, too much thinking gives me a headache.
Mischa - see next comment... addressed to you.
Swag - Yes I've given it a fair amount of thought too. and most of my conclusions are in this blog (and this comment). Decades ago I was in a mainframe computer room and I had a transistor radio... it was clearly picking up signals from the computer memory although there was no "transmitter".. it was just stray energy from the memory (with power applied). With no power, the memory did not emanate any signals at all... dead. One of the big problems is interpreting those signals, they are meaningless unless you have the "key" and we each have our own unique key and it's only known to us.
......In fact the Memory itself did not ever emanate the signals, but because of the applied power/energy, the movement of electrons to and from memory issued the detectable signals... in other words it only transmitted when energy was present and active, otherwise dead. Same with our brain and body. It's possible we emanate low levels of some sort of radiation (giving "credibility" to receiving thoughts from someone else... dogs seem to have this ability to receive undetected signals from the brain or body?) .... but our brain only emanates "data" when energy is applied and is active (only while thinking). When you're dead there is no energy, no thinking, no signals, no memory, no nothing. But when you die, nothing has left your brain or body (except maybe moisture vapors resulting in a minuscule loss of weight).
......If you could see (well you can see) the molecules in a LCD watch.... when they are energised the Liquid Crystals align perpendicular to a polarized screen and therefore appear black. When the energy is removed the crystals realign to their natural state parallel to the polarized screen and appear to have vanished. They are still there, they have not left, and have not changed to "energy", or waves, vapors, or anything else, Still there, but without energy applied they have no significance... no data... no "memory", no meaning. They only have meaning while energy is present and active.
It's kind of like when someone is wearing camoflauge in the woods... with no movement you can't detect their existance (memories) but when they move THEN you can see them (transmitting signals to our eyes). You must be alive to move.
.....Imagine iron filings on a sheet of glass. With a magnet underneath, the filings change their alignment and stand up... (in a computer memory the bit is "set"=1).. .. remove the magnet and they realign and lie down (Computer memory is "zero"). Nothing has "left" when the magnet (life=energy) was removed, the filings are still there but with all the filings in the same condition (dead, no power, bit set to zero) there is no "data"= memories. When we die, the energy is gone and all memory bits (synapses = a gate) no longer reveal their content when they fire... memories lost forever. Energy is required in order to allow memory to exist, otherwise the data is meaningless, physically still there, but meaningless, like removing the magnet.
.....We will never be able to "see" someones memory, live or dead because memory is only revealed when energy is actively moving thru our brain (a specific thought or memory)... When alive but not specifically thinking of a specific memory those synapses are not firing and thereby revealing their content, and when we're dead, no energy is moving, all is cleared to zero.
......Pretty disappointing eh?
Mischamowse - barb4sun asked the same question below... this was my comment to her.
ReplyDelete= = = = =

Man... you really ARE a MENSA chicken. :)
ReplyDeleteMan... you really ARE a MENSA chicken. :)
ReplyDeleteMan... you really ARE the one and only MENSA chicken. :)
ReplyDeleteSwag ? I have no idea if my conclusions are valid... the technical aspects yes, but what really happens? ... this blog is my own theory... others have other theories (our essence floats thru the universe forever, return for another life, etc) but none of this can ever be positively proved or disproved. It can appear to be proved but coincidence can never be ruled out.
ReplyDeleteBTW - Bert is a Mensa Chicken based on the "Chicken Mensa scale" (Smarter than the average Chicken). Humans use a different Mensa rating.
BTWBTW - Do you know what I've learned from my daughter Lisa who speaks Spanish?..... (This is true)-Mensa in Spanish means "Foolish-Stupid". Hmmmm. How ironic is that? To most in the world it means Smart but in Spanish means stupid.
"The word "Mensa" means "table" in Latin. The name stands for a round-table society, where race, color, creed, national origin, age, politics, educational or social background are irrelevant". It was a round-table for discussion and exchange of knowledge.
So are you saying that you, Bert, are a foolish table chicken?
ReplyDeletePerhaps it's time for a new name. How about "Bert, the Exceptional Chicken?"
Swag - Hmmm, well...I think I reject "exceptional" because it could mean exceptionally good or exceptionally bad. ? (thinking thinking...)... Well it appears mensa could also mean exceptionally smart or exceptionally stupid? Hmmmmm.
ReplyDeleteWell I guess I'll just stick with mensa and let people draw their own conclusions.
Keep that energy flowing thru your brain......wait wait.... I think I can hear it thinking right Now... Yes... I can see some of your memories...(focusing)..... WOW, that was amazing.....
My mind is always working. Constantly analyzing. I guess that's the "Virgo" in me.
ReplyDeleteThe more I learn, the more I'm convinced of how little I know! Bert, you're one smart chicken!
ReplyDeleteHmmm....that's some deep fried chicken, Bert! You need to be careful with that....you don't want to crash your hard drive!
ReplyDeleteSwag - I bet your husband really appreciates that....?
ReplyDeleteRecon - I think I know, I think I know, but who knows?
bambam - Yes, it's deep, but let's leave my hard drive out of this.
At least I didn't mention your gizzards.
ReplyDeleteMy hard drive (brain) crashes and burns on a regular basis!
ReplyDeleteLOL.... no no no he does not!
ReplyDeleteYour friend swag directed me to your blog and my already high regard for her opinion has just taken a great leap forward, or at least there has been a great flapping of wings! ;-) I was thoroughly impressed by your analogy and look forward to reading more of your thoughts! Kudos to you!
ReplyDeleteMr Wizard - Gosh thanks, This moon-brain blog was a departure from my usual trivial nonsense blogs... but for no known reason, occasionally Bert gets a bit philosophical and almost serious. For the most part I never feel that very many would be interested in the mental journeys of a Chicken. I have thoughts about nearly everything, but I'm afraid that maybe I'm the only one who agrees with me and I'm afraid that my thoughts often exceed my knowledge?
ReplyDelete.... My comment (the long one) to Swag below on Jan 8 could be considered to be part of this blog... I rambled on.
I really enjoy thinking...I often challenge (foolishly I suppose) well established concepts most of which will never be proven one way or another, so ? I guess there is mostly no point, but I still do it. I have many more already written similar blogs but... well, maybe someday? Bert tends to go for the short easy-to-read blogs.
Hey Bert... I, for one, would love to see more "meaty" blogs from you! I really enjoyed this post.
ReplyDeleteMensa means stupid in Spanish.. Mesa is table in Spanish.
ReplyDeleteI used to write for a magazine called La Mesa ... The Table.
I like this bloggy blog, Bert. I agree (as you know) in the concepts of energy and the fact that we never truly die... our energy just shifts and changes and grows and becomes... other things.
I like those thoughts... and yanno.. when you think about the fact that all of my memories someday will be... nothing... it kinda puts things into perspective and some things don't seem so bad... wouldn't you agree?
Stef - I sure do agree. Make the absolute most of our time here because it's the only time we'll ever be here (or anywhere).
ReplyDelete..... Nothing either enters or leaves the universe so our physical bodies and mental energy persist also (often convert back and forth, energy>matter>energy>matter). When we die we die as a human, but our bodies and energy just continue in other forms that have nothing to do with being a human being.
I really like that thought.
ReplyDeleteThanks again for reminding me of this blog!
S
Thanks for the link to this blog, Bert.
ReplyDeleteI didn't have energy at home for about a month, so when I came back my inbox was flooded and I just deleted everything.
I really enjoyed this post, it made me think. I think I have a few people I want to show this post to, hope you don't mind. Excuse me while I wander off pondering external/internal storage and buried hard drives that are eventually gonna become fertilizer.
Mythical-U - Ya you betcha. There's more where that came from (if I ever get my act together). I occasionally get these thoughts ... kinda like the "chicken - egg" thing. I like the thoughts/thinking where there is no "real" answer because it's hard for people to argue with you then. Hmmm.
ReplyDeleteAhh Bert, you are a sweetheart, to take us back to this gem of a blog! I'd been on road trip again ;) Will catch up and give our nest some spring cleaning.
ReplyDeleteBareheart - It's SO good to see you again. I'm most interested in your road trip and insight.
