And she doesn't need batteries.

Just look at that smile...

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Looks like a kids battery operated toy...?             Tuna actually likes her.

She prefers to sit on my hand...all the time. She goes everywhere with me. We go for walks, shopping, events, ... People stare (They think she's a puppet, "Is that real?").  Her name is "Shmoo" (the Al Capp cartoon) = Al Capp- Shmoo

"The Shmoo believed that the only way to happiness was to bring happiness to others."

Are you talking to ME ? ?

She's a "Silky" or "Silkie", about 2 months old, just 1.5 pounds but will not get much bigger. She has black skin (dark dark blue) and black bones, (but tastes like Chicken?) and very bright blue ear lobes.  Marco Polo wrote of this furry chicken during his travels in Asia in 13th century.
Ridiculously tame, cuddly, and lovable.
I love her gentle contented chortling.  Her sisters won first place and ribbons at the County Fair.

  1. Sweetest bird I've ever seen!!!!! *swooooooon* (Don't tell Kippy I said that).

You and Faye have two very similar pictures of birds saying, "You talkin to ME??" You should compare!

I hope you two get to meet at the State Fair this year.

  2. Shmoo is lovely and sweet! You must have just gotten her. Is that a blue ear lobe she has? She seems to see about as well as our Polish Crested hen, Lisa :) Lisa is very tame too, and has the neatest, most comforting cluck. Aren't chickens fun?!

We sold 10 of Sara's extra hens and 14 roosters at our monthly animal sale Sat. There was a family there with the cutest assortment of smaller chickens, which an older lady with a German accent bought. If we didn't have such a large flock ourselves, I would have been tempted to take them home. Instead, Sara bought a pair of pigeons, which I'll write about later.

Now, will Shmoo be an indoor birdie, or an outside birdie? May she be with you a long time!

  3. Duchamp - Yes... a real bird...but looks fake she looks so real. She's sitting on my arm as I type.

sam - Yes she is so sweet and gentle, a great companion. haven't seen the Faye "me?" pic yet.

Chickie - Got her at fair a week ago...hard to type with a chicken on yur hand. BRILLIANT blue, very intense bright iridescent blue.. and beak is blue too. Haven't seen her feet yet...? I don't know if she can see?...seems to do ok?
Intend to be part of flock, but one hen is Very jealous and picks on Shmoo..so may end up being an indoor Chicken? (Wife says... "Indoor Chickens = supper"... so don't know yet).
What's this monthly animal sale?? I may be interested in going sometime...?

geminai - I Don't know if she can see...she hasn't left my hand for week since I got her. Actually, I have seen her look at Tuna a few times. and she does peck at food and gets it.

  5. Our local feed mill, Zimmers Feed and Grain, is now having a monthly animal swap/sale on the second Sat. of each month, from 9am-12pm. Usually they have just a spring and fall sale, which is more heavily attended. There were 5-6 sellers, including us, this time. Ducks, rabbits, chickens, pigeons, guineas, sometimes cats and puppies. Couldn't say that the same folks come every time. It wouldn't be like what you're used to in Forest Lake.

  6. Critters From the Woods

Let's see if this link will take you to Lisa. She's at the tail end of my Critters From the Woods photo album, on page 2 of my albums.

  7. In fact, Bert, you saw that photo in 2009, and said it looks like your chicken, Alice :)

  8. Astra - Good photos are easier when you have cute subjects. Yes, she's a sweetie.

Chickie - Ah yes, I remember. Lisa looks like she can see better than Alice though?

  9. can you put her hair...uhmmm i mean feathers into a pony tail on top of her head, this way she will see better. you know like they do for poodles?? she is ADORABLE! I love, love LOVE silkies!

  10. Lisa can see fairly well, but not well enough behind her because we can sneak up on her and catch her without her noticing. If I bend down real low, I can see her eyes :)

  11. Love2 - Hmmm a Chicken with a Pony tail, what a concept. Some people trim the feathers around eyes, but... she seems to manage so I won't.

chickie - I'm not sure how well Shmoo can see... she doesn't move much, but she can peck food easily. Shmoo can simply be picked up anytime by anyone... no attempt at retreat. It's very difficult to see her eyes... and I have yet to see her 5 toe'd feet (Blue I'm told). More than calm...rarely moves around, but is very healthy.

  12. omg, sheis a strange looking critter.....how does she stay so white....so tiny...truly dont know how she sees where she is going.....I love her tho,,,,,

  13. equine - I can't imagine she see's very well? but she manages ok. All my white birds manage to stay bright spotless white... seems impossible but they do. The Doves and Pigeons LOVE baths. The pigeons fly to the house when they see me bringing 95 degree water for their bath... year round. http://bertthemensachicken.multiply.com/journal/item/513/Steaming_Hot_tub_at_zero_deg_F...

samadri - Yes, I remember now... she does look like my Polish Silver Lace, (Lisa chicken, not Faye). Maybe we should introduce them ?

  15. Ohhhh it's soooo cute! She does sorta look like a cute stuffed animal, though, haha. I agree with whover suggested the pony tail. That would be far more for my benifit that hers though. She's obviously adjusted to the sight stituation and sees what she needs to. I'd just want to be able to see her peepers. Wonder if they are blue too?

  16. Boy, do they! Sara put a small tub of water in the enclosure today, and the pigeons were fighting over who go the first bath! The female, Crackers, was even trying to bathe outside the tub.

  17. chickie - I always know when they want a "real" bath cause they put their head in their drinking water, lay down, and pretend they are in a tub bathing... a "Dry bath"... Kinda cute.

  18. I'd be tempted to put 'butch wax' or mousse on her head to see if she can see (so long as it wasn't injurious!)
I remember the Al Capp reference and Shmoo is a perfect name!

  19. shmoo is a perfect name... agree with duchamp. also agree do the butch wax lol

    carolie -
So far... where ever I take her... people flock around in big groups and ask a gazillion questions and she has 10 hands on her petting her...She doesn't mind.

    duchamp -
    Love2
I did give some though to clipping around her eye? but... I know she wouldn't put up with it and I'd be afraid to injure her. A few owners have plucked the feathers near eye, but...if anything was permanent... I'd consider it. She does seem to see better than you would expect (I think?).
Just looking at her... she looks like a Shmoo (with a blue beak)... and she symbolizes the essence of a Shmoo = Brings happiness to others.

  23. LOL, she looks like something from Sesame street doesn't she? What a cute bird and sounds like she has a lovely nature too.... Aren't the pigeons jealous now?
