CHICKEN HELPER
This is my Chicken Helper, in charge of the Skill saw. Truffles,.. a 3 yr old Polish Buff Lace. She prefers human company. She is constantly underfoot.. I have to keep lifting her aside and be careful when I walk. She thinks she's a human. Loves to ride in the car and sing. -----> Truffles sings Opera Her voice is raspy and squawky (and loud).
I was laying down working on something and she hops on top of me... I stand up and she tries to stay on me... fluttering while I'm standing up and she is then on my shoulder.
. . .
One of my Pigeons, Velcro... can also often be found climbing on my bench and tools... in my way.
same with all my dogs -- I don't mind too much
ReplyDeletemust take their jobs as supervisors very seriously ;) lol
ReplyDeleteGoods - Yes, my dog was always in the middle of any project too.
ReplyDeleterenee - They sure don't let me make a move without watching me. Some of the Chickens would snatch small parts from me and run away with them.
That's too funny-makes you wonder what they're thinking-if they have an idea or they just like messing with you :D
ReplyDeleteI'd bet on it ...you are the one and only Chicken Whisperer in the world. ;-D
ReplyDeleteI love truffles she is so beautiful when I get better I want to have some of those
ReplyDeleteRenee - I wonder that too.... what are they thinking ? ?
ReplyDeletefrans - Hmm, could be...We do have some long serious conversations.
equine - Truffles is a hoot... somewhat different from the other Chickens, not a loner but she acts independent of them. You never know which Chickens will be "special".
ONE nice thing about Chickens is they are so easy and inexpensive to keep. I LOVE watching them roam about the yard...my "Roving lawn ornaments". When I appear at the door, they all rush toward me... expecting a handout.
I used to have nine horses, can't now in town, so the Chickens are a good substitute and take the place of horses very nicely.
My son and I used to hand raise (meaning we handled them every day from birth) fancy rats for the local pet store. I kept one female for a breeder and she SO thought she was human that she absolutely panicked when I put her in with our big old male ... ran screaming all over his cage! (Even HE didn't know what to make of her.) My son finally came up with a good idea and put this young female's mother in the cage too. Once she saw "Mom" was "doing it" she decided it was okay and the two of them produced large litters within two days of each other, combined their nests, and alternated feeding and taking care of the babies.
ReplyDeletedellhart - What a neat story. Sounds like you have a good understanding of animals. I believe that if you try to think as they do, they are much better pets and more cooperative. Daily exposure is essential if they are to be good companions. When they stop moving and look you in the eye for a few seconds, it usually means some sort of bonding is going on. It's a good feeling.
ReplyDeleteChicken - it SURE is a good feeling! Not that my son is in the Navy I'm down to just the one cat, Woody, who keeps me company. :0)
ReplyDeleteNow that my son is in the Navy I'm down to just one cat - Woody - who keeps me company and waits for me by the door each time I come home. (He once even tried to open it for me - I could hear the regular door knob being rattled) And you're right - it sure IS a good feeling when you connect!
ReplyDeleteI am seriously thinking my riding days over. I don't know If I want to take a chance of falling and breaking the fused disc. A lot to think abbout. I love flower gardening photography and chickens bso think I would survive
ReplyDeleteYou are certainly the bird man :)
ReplyDeletedelhart - Our Tuna Cat and the birds get along very nicely...are not buddies but get along together just fine. The second I lay back in the recliner with Simon Pigeon, Tuna is right there napping next to Simon.
ReplyDeleteEquine - Yes, I suspect your riding days are over.... not a good idea anymore. Falling would be a disaster, and I would think the swaying movement would be harmful too (and later painful?). I did pretty much the same... after a while I just petted the horses.
Chickie - How did that happen? I guess it's because I can't have farm animals in town (except Chickens). We still have our Tuna Cat, our Diesel Dog left us a few years ago... have not ruled out getting another?
I think about getting another dog for the time when Ben is no longer with us. I would go for a puppy, so the dog can be trained to be good around the livestock. I've had two adult dogs around the place in years past that couldn't stay because they went after the chickens (we acquired them as adults because family were moving).
ReplyDeleteI believe that the animals help us in so many ways and if we are responsible humans then we take care of them. I am wore out from trying to take care of belle It is getting really hard to force myself but she relies on me. Not like I can turn her out in a big pasture right now. She always makes me feel good when I simply touch her. I don't know if she will ever be sound again. Time will tell I guess. I think she is just foot sore as we pulled her shows off don't know if I would ever put shoes on a horse again it mask them vulnerable when they're off ( ie .. Sore feet)
ReplyDeleteI had a good animal day today, just standing out in the pen, scratching the cow and talking to her, hanging out with the horse, checking on the goats. Our cow may not "amount to much", being that she's a heifer calf with a twin brother, and therefore 95% chance of being sterile. But I'd still want to keep her even if she couldn't have calves, because cows are just cool. And it felt so good to be out with the animals on a cloudy, cool day, not getting much done.
ReplyDeleteMel, I hope your horse feels better soon, and you, too!
equine - It surprises me just how much a part of us our pets are... So important. I don't ever want to be without some kind of pet (in addition to my wife of course). It seems Belle maybe shouldn't be ridden, and it seems maybe you should not be riding, so... it kinda works out ok for both of you.
ReplyDeleteChickie - Dog vs Chickens, our concern too. Diesel German Shepherd was fantastic...The Chickens used to ride on his back. He didn't care for that but he put up with it. He'd lay down, they'd sleep on him.
On my farm I loved looking out the windows and seeing the cows and horses in the fields. I miss that (That's why I now have Chickens). When I walked into the pasture they'd all come over for attention... a good feeling
