Fortunately we were not in it... that's the loft bedroom area. Tree is about 2'+ at base, multiple trunks, only the top 35 feet hit the cabin. The main trunk just missed by about 5 feet. In video you can see main trunk on the ground feet from the cabin. That would have totally crushed it. The impact knocked everything inside to the floor.
Seems I now have another project.
Before building the cabin I cut down the trees I considered to be a threat, but I never guessed one to the South so far away was a threat.
A few years ago a tornado ripped the top half off of a huge oak and dropped it just a few feet in front of the cabin. A cabin in the woods is nice, but not woods in the cabin.
Wow! So glad no one was hurt and the damage wasn't more extensive!
ReplyDeleteWell, that's no fun! I suppose we can be thankful that it happened now, instead of in a rain storm. Glad it's not worse, but wish it hadn't happened at all!
ReplyDeleteฺ๊BUMMER DUDE!
ReplyDeleteIf A Tree Falls Cartoons and Comics
extra fire wood / lumber ?
Oh no! That will keep you busy. Like you said, good thing no one was in it. I didn't know you got tornados there, certainly not in winter.
ReplyDeleteWhat a bummer. More work than you needed,eh.
ReplyDeleteOuch ! I hope you found it before too much snow got inside.
ReplyDeletenow you have some nice oak to make repairers with and possibly a table or two-not what you really needed I'll bet.
geminia - Not sure when it happened, Last time we were at the farm we did not walk the 1/4 mile to the cabin. A weekends worth of repair will do it I hope.
ReplyDeleteChickie - see geminia comment. Trees are suppose to fall to the East or SEast.. a maveric tree from the South.
Goodstuff - Yes... we will have a lot of great firewood.. and no I didn't hear the sound of the tree falling.
ienvan - no winter tornado. That was a few years ago in summer. This time it was just wind and old but healthy tree.
transform - Agree, more work than I needed... or wanted.
seester - The inner structure and vapor barrier held. Nothing penetrated the inside (whew) just the outer layer but it's a mess inside from everything falling. I fear roof will leak though from melting snow and later, rain. So must get up there with a tarp untl I can repair roof in spring.
Enough wood in that tree to build another cabin?
ReplyDeleteHope the roof is good , How are the chickens and other fowl doing in all this . went on the Iowa site for road conditions last nite . Minn was so pretty great red spot all the way across the button of the state , couldn't they find a better way to decorate for Christmas . Got some of mine shoveled of the decks , but nothing I can do till the plows come through on the rest of it
ReplyDeletefirewood is good to bad you can't use it this year
yetanother - It sure is more than enough wood the Heat the cabin... for several years.
ReplyDeleteranky - The structure is fine... outer layer punctured and shingles destroyed, a tarp for now, but a weekend fixup to restore. Not too bad. Minnesota is more of a blue state, but was red for this snowstorm. Our plows just came by... I may not leave house till spring when it melts... gigantic pile of snow entire driveway. Where's global warming when you need it ?

Talk about building from scratch !!!!! LOL
ReplyDeleteseee - Maybe I could build a log cabin ?
ReplyDeleteThe Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minnesota collapsed due to heavy snow and winds earlier today, postponing the Giants / Vikings game. No one was injured. Cool video!
Goods - Not too surprising... lots of snow. 8 hrs today, didn't finish snowblowing... tomorrow... tired.
ReplyDeleteWow Bert... I'm glad you weren't inside at the time. A lot of work there, though. What will you do with the wood?
ReplyDeleteTint - It would have been terrifying to be in there when it hit. I bet the ground shook like an earthquake. For the past 40 years I've always burned wood to help heat the house, love the smell, and the exercise. But for many reasons, we put in a gas fireplace now so... only burn wood in outdoor firepit in the back yard. But I have a neighbor who burns wood to save money on fuel so if he'll help me cut it, I'll give him the wood.
