July 7, 2005 - March 1, 2011 R.I.P. Betty

They were the same age... Betty and Bert. When I came home I found Bert huddling over her trying to keep her warm.  Bert would not leave her side.   All the others had gone into the warm coop like they always do, but Bert and Betty had stayed behind in the Chicken shelter...it was dark and freezing cold.. But it was too late. Betty had just died a very short time before I found them.
I took her inside because it seemed she may still be breathing, but...too late. She was special... she would come to me for affection. She loved to be held in my arms. She would close her eyes while I petted her.
     Betty at 3 months.
She had not been well for several weeks. I've kept her inside and I've been giving her antibiotics daily. She seemed to be getting better. Today was the first day she seemed more perky. It was warmer today (40+) so I put her outside...I hope she enjoyed her last day.

  2. Aslow - Thanks. Unless others have lost pets, it's probably difficult to understand.
. . . . . I was so proud of Bert... He is always thoughtful and a gentleman to the hens, always the protector.

  3. Bert, I'm so very sorry. It's hard losing a loved pet and it seems the other Bert has also lost a dear companion.

I've always been amazed at the many birds species which form long-term pair bonds, some even being monogamous for their entire lifetime.

I hope Bert doesn't fret too much. In fact, I hope neither of the Berts do. *hugs*

  7. Mila – I too am amazed at the personal bond amongst animals…especially birds. Very few people realize just how strong and emotional the bond is, animals don’t shed tears. When you get to know them intimately it becomes overwhelmingly clear. Thanks.

Tint – Thanks, I’d like to think she’s off in a Chicken heaven somewhere.

Geminia – Many times I’ve been impressed with Bert’s behavior. It would be great if all humans were that noble.

Pets – I’ve always known it was just a matter of time, so I’m glad for the time she was here. Thanks.

  8. I'm so sorry, Bert, I know how you feel. Betty was very pretty. It's so sweet when a chicken has such an affinity for a person. I'm glad she was in your care. I know your coop will feel sad and empty. :(

  9. Chickie - Not sure... ? Hard to tell with Chickens, but Bert seemed to be moping around a bit today, I think he understands? Kinda quiet. It will be different without her. Thanks.

  13. Bert, I'm sure I posted a comment here the other day, but it's not here now. I'm very sorry for the loss of a good friend. I know how it hurts to lose them.

  14. LowerC - I don't recall seeing but then.. my thoughts were with Betty at the time. I really didn't expect this many responses but I'm thankful. Thanks. Seems odd to see only 5 Chickens now.
