(The title refers to the fertilizer).
This is my HI-TECH HOME. We're probably the most pampered Chickens around. The coop has to withstand temps from minus 40 to 120 above.
For Winter: It has thermostatically controlled radiant floor heating for the Minnesota Winters. The fully insulated coop never goes below freezing and the nests stay at 45 deg so the water does not need to be heated. Thanks to the gravity air lock to the outside thru the skyway (Door is always open), the expense of heating is a mere $5 per year. With a small draft-free muffin fan providing negative air pressure, frost never forms around the doors, and all ammonia laden exhaust is ducted to the outside, also removing dust and the very high humidity (98% down to 45%). In Winter I use a 40 watt standard light bulb on a timer which adds a bit of extra heat.
Summer: On 100 deg Summer days, a programmed set-back thermostat cooling system with cool air ducted from the cool cement floor in back, keeps the temp between 73 and 86 degrees even though the pole barn which contains the Coop, reaches 120 deg. On really hot days the coop is always cooler than outside in the shade. When the large cooling fan is not needed, a small muffin fan is automatically switched on to force a small amount of fresh air in which is then vented outside thru the skyway. Wireless remote alarms sound if the temperature exceeds the set limits (32-86). Summer and Winter, the inside always has 13 hours of “Daylight” on timers (for maximum egg production). In Summer I use a 25 watt (3watt) LED bulb on a timer which add NO heat to the coop. During the day, the lights are automatically switched off and soft outside light is provided thru the skyway (somewhat darkened, good for nesting).
30 remote controlled wireless color cameras monitor inside the coop and the entire yard, front/back. The remote controlled pan/tilt cameras are all wired to the computer for broadcast on the internet, and also to every TV/VCR/DVD recorder. This also provides CCTV surveillance of the entire property, all activity anywhere day or night can be recorded on the computer or VCR. From any TV, we can watch the full-time “Chicken Channel”. At nite the infra-red cameras allows a normal view even with no light at all, or just a small 1.5 watt nite light. It’s easy to see on TV the instant any eggs are laid and need collecting.
Cleaning is nearly automatic. All “fertilizer” drops into the waterproof hopper where it then falls into the trough. Every 2 weeks or so the trough is slid out and a clean trough put in it’s place. The trough is emptied into the compost pile. If necessary, the hopper is easily cleaned with a “Mr Swifter” using paper towels. The inside of the coop is always shiny clean white with no “aroma” at all. It helps keep the Chicken healthy and free of any diseases or ailments. The coop is designed so it would need no attention/cleaning at all for up to a month if desired. It has automatic food/water.
UPDATE : THis picture is before the Solar Aviary addition,
(Ace L ) ----- Although Chickens don't like snow, the cold doesn't bother them so they are free to leave the coop and roam around the back yard all day (Our Roving Lawn Ornaments). Below 10~ degrees, their combs can freeze so then they are not allowed outside. They LOVE to eat any bugs they can find (we have none left) and they also cultivate all the weeds. Unfortunately, they also LOVE tomatoes in the garden. They have no fear of machinery and the lawnmower discharge will send them rolling across the yard (Scrambled eggs). I have to be careful while using the leaf blower and the weed whacker (naked Chickens). When I'm working on things/equipment, they will climb all over my tools and equipment, they are very curious and get in my way, I have to keep pushing them aside. Sometimes they will land on my shoulder or on my head. Bert (the rooster) gets very upset whenever one of the hens is missing and crows until they are all together again. They keep us entertained. The German Shepherd Diesel, and the Cat Tuna, and the Chickens, are all good friends.
I bought those little springy hair clippy thingies for hair, that look like miniature rakes that clamp together like a set of spring-loaded teeth. Before throwing dirty socks in laundry bin, I clamp the socks together (On the heel side), wash/dry, and 99.8% of the time they are still together when done. Then I toss them in the clean socks drawer still clipped together. SOOOooooo easy.
NOTE- Some brands of clips have sharper teeth than others and work better.
So now instead of missing one sock, they vanish in pairs. Much better. Martha Stewart often calls me for advice for new ideas for her show. Next week- - Napkin folding.

Men and dogs do as they're told.... Women and cats do as they please (Someone once said).

Then there was the time my neighbor Magic Mary, brought over this "treat" for us. So she proudly held out the plate, I glanced at it and said ..."Oh, dead mice"... needless to say, she was not pleased. It was really hard to eat them though, they tasted like hamster.
At our local Mall, about 10 sets of Canadian Geese parents and about 60 babies (3 weeks old?) slowly crossed from one end of the mall to the other (2 blocks) to a small pond, confidently stopping traffic where necessary (honk honk). The cars stopped and waited patiently for the long line of geese to waddle past. The geese obeyed all the laws.

I have learned that all animals have deep feelings and emotions, the exact same feelings as humans. I have seen them get upset, they love, they have joy, sadness, anxiety, fear, jealousy, frustration , anger, rejection, lust, urges, maternal instincts, fairness, manners, depression, compassion, etc, all the emotions that we have. They are just little people.
Lizard (dark) and 2.5 (white)
When Lizard (2.5’s husband) got killed by a hawk a few weeks ago(Video link Lizard and 2.5 in love), 2.5 became very despondent, lethargic, and was in deep depression. She just sat around grieving with no expression, no movement, just staring straight ahead not noticing anything around her… so sad, you could almost see the tears in her eyes. She lost weight. So Ace felt sorry for her and went out and bought two more pigeons, a male Arch Angel (Archie),
and a female Arabian Trumpeter (Edith).
Archie has iridescent feathers that have all the colors of the rainbow when in the sun. Edith also has iridescent feathers. They are beautiful birds.
Then 2.5 came back to life again, but she was not happy with the "intruders", Archie and Edith. She wanted Lizard back again, she was bitter. 2.5 did not get along very well with Archie and Edith. So 2.5 tolerated the intruders for a week or so, but then one day I watched 2.5 fly away as usual, but her flight was UNusual in that she stayed very low, weaving thru the trees as she left as if she was hiding her exit.
I knew it was a bad sign. Her life had been shattered. I knew I’d never see her again, she was leaving forever and would not return. Tame pigeons are not very good at surviving in the wild so I knew it was the end for her. I waited for days, but she did not return.
But then, a miracle, on the 4th day and never expecting to see her again, 2.5 finally came back home. When I saw her this morning I ran out on the deck. She saw me and instantly flew to me and landed on the railing next to me.
She walked right up to me expecting breakfast, which I happened to have in my hand. She seemed so happy to be back, she was excited… I think she was smiling? We sat and talked to each other for a while until I froze in my bathrobe and went inside. She finished eating and taking a bath, then flew to the coop where she is now resting…. back home again. It’s so nice to see her back, I missed her. I hope the three will now become a family, even though each is from a different ethnic background.
UPDATE: Archie and Edith were both killed by a neighborhood cat several weeks later. 2.5 managed to survive by hiding in the rafters. Again 2.5 became depressed and motionless. So I got her yet another partner, then she was very active and happy once again.
But then... more tragedy in her life. With her new partner, Ringo the Dove (Spot Dove's ex-husband)... 2.5 was again madly in love now with her tiny husband Ringo. See link below for the rest of the story.
(Link disabled ) = I heard a loud thud as a bird hit hard on the window.
BUT, ... (update)
that's not the end of the story... there was more intense love, another new partner for 2.5 and again she fell madly in love with her new female partner, Velcro. For 8 years they were inseparable, hugging and kissing constantly ... SOooo madly in love.
Then, tragedy again. While flying to the deck to visit me, Velcro got killed by a hawk. 2.5 went into withdrawal.. for a whole year she just stood in her aviary window gazing out hoping Velcro would return. 2.5 would come in the house and call to Velcro over and over, hoping Velcro was in the house, where they had spent many days together. It was painful to watch...
(update) . . . Eventually yet another partner, Newbie. It took many many months but eventually 2.5 accepted Newbie, but.... It's just not the same. They are partners, but none of the intense emotional love, hugging and kissing. It's not hard to see that 2.5 still wants Velcro back ~:<( ... ... (me too).
This morning before heading to the barnyard, I was in the Bathroom with my Pet rabbit. I was combing my hare when Tuna, the cat, was trying to crawl up the toilet tank and slipped and fell and hit the flusher handle about the same time he grabbed the lid which promptly started to close over him as he descended into the vortex.
You should have seen his eyes. Panic. All nine lives gone with just one flush. But being a cat, he managed to extricate himself without even getting too wet… and then he strolled away as if nothing happened, as if he had done it all on purpose. Chickens aren’t known for their sense of humor, but..ha ha ha (ROFL ROFL) ha ha. That’s when Tuna looked back at me in disgust and walked away. Oooouuu, Mr Cool cat, ha ha ha. Bert
